Viva la Revolución!

Sometimes inspiration lies right on your digital doorstep. You could go on a far away journey, just to see some elephants. Or you could stay home and get swept away on your couch or in the hammock on your balcony. In times of Netflix, search for an inspirational movie, preferably about one of the most iconic revolutionary of all times.

It was back in 1952 when a young aspiring doctor, 23 years old at the time and only one term before his final exams, went on a life- and maybe world-changing journey. Ernesto and his friend Alberto left the safety of their families back home in Argentina and started off on their cranky old motorbike to explore the southern Americas.

They travelled through deserts, crossed rivers and passed snowy mountains. They crossed paths with miners, prostitutes and repair shop owners to ultimately end up working in a camp for expelled leprosi patients somewhere in the wild amazon jungles. But their journey was more than just a motorcycle trip to another country. They encountered each other and themselves. This change in characters, their differences, clashes and problem solving make this movie more moving than only the marvelous scenery.

Undoubtedly those experiences influenced the further path of a young doctor who would become the revolutionary of Cuba later on. While going on this journey with the two of them, I felt like part of it. We do not have to follow pre-drawn paths. We certainly also do not have to kill people, which I do not want to glorify here, but maybe we can peacefully lead the change. Even doctors can take part in revolutions!
